Based on Published Research

A 2026 randomized clinical trial conducted by Harvard Medical School and NIMHANS found that structured yoga, delivered alongside standard buprenorphine treatment, significantly accelerated opioid withdrawal recovery.

The Five-Component Approach

Each session follows a structured sequence designed to target the sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity that characterizes opioid withdrawal.

1 Relaxation Practices

Settling into the body. Guided awareness to shift from fight-or-flight toward rest-and-restore.

2 Gentle Postures

Mindfully performed movement - not vigorous exercise. Gentle enough for patients in active withdrawal.

3 Sectional Breathing

Structured breath regulation techniques that slow respiration and activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

4 Pranayama

Left-nostril breathing and bhramari (humming breath) - the core mechanism. These techniques reduce respiration rate and shift autonomic balance.

5 Guided Relaxation with Affirmations

Abbreviated yoga nidra - a structured deep relaxation practice that supports sleep quality and emotional regulation during recovery.

Designed as adjunct therapy

This program complements standard pharmacological treatment (such as buprenorphine), not replace it. Yoga addresses a critical gap - autonomic nervous system regulation - that medication alone does not fully resolve. It's accessible during acute withdrawal, when patients may struggle with the concentration required for CBT or meditation alone.
